Celebrate the Lunar New Year at Crown with colourful celebrations of music, dancing, fireworks and culinary delights - 12 January 2015
Crown Melbourne will host a vibrant and colourful festival from Friday 13 to Sunday 15 February.
Melbourne, 12 January 2015 – In celebration of the Year of the Goat and to welcome a new Lunar Year of good fortune and prosperity, Crown Melbourne will host a vibrant and colourful festival from Friday 13 to Sunday 15 February. The Year of the Goat is associated with solidarity, calmness and harmony, and will be celebrated with elaborate decorations, cooking demonstrations, food stalls bursting with delicious Asian street food, a spectacular fireworks display and a host of exhibitions, cultural activities and live entertainment.
An exciting weekend program of entertainment for the whole family includes Crown’s famous Riverwalk Hawker’s Bazaar, good luck giveaways, cultural dance performances, a Video Star Karaoke challenge and spectacular dragon and lion processions weaving their way through Crown and along the Riverwalk from Queensbridge Street through to Clarendon Street. According to Chinese legend, the dragon is the ruler of the sky and water, holding the highest position amongst all animals, whilst the lion serves as its protector. The ceremonial dances performed during Lunar New Year celebrations serve to ward off evil spirits through the thunderous sound of loud drums and firecrackers.
Each day across the weekend from 11:00am to 11:00pm, underneath a canopy of glittering lights and lanterns, more than 60 stallholders will fill the Riverwalk for the Hawker’s Bazaar, offering a sensory overload of traditional arts and crafts, cooking demonstrations, Asian delicacies, music and interactive performances. From 9:30pm on Saturday 14th February, a spectacular fireworks display will light up the sky along the river and ward off evil spirits for the year ahead.
Crown’s Atrium will be transformed with a month-long installation representing the Chinese zodiac sign. To commemorate the Year of the Goat, an intricate 5 metre x 5 metre sculpture featuring a family of goats will be the centrepiece of a decorative display that includes arrangements of delicate spring flowers, lanterns, light projections, lucky charms, lucky red Ang Pao envelopes, gold coins and more. The Lunar New Year Atrium Display will run from 28 January – 28 February.
